Socratic AI Tutoring

What are AI tutors?

AI tutors are digital learning companions (agents) that can support student learning anytime, anywhere. Built as Socratic tutors, they can guide students through thoughtful questions rather than just handing out answers, drawing directly from verified course materials.

Besides performing a Socratic function, such AI tutors can be configured for other uses: help students navigate course content, generate self-assessment quizzes, and generate immediate formative feedback among others.

The use cases examples from creative teachers are constantly growing! Crucially, these tools are designed to supplement teaching, operating under the continuous supervision of course instructors.

Why this project?

Our teachers at TU/e express a growing need to guide and help students learn with AI responsibly and critically, rather than relying on it passively. Our teachers also indicate a great opportunity to use AI to help them offer the students more personalized study support in their ever-growing classrooms.

This need is what the TU/e AI Strategic Framework for Engineering Education recognises. The Framework calls for a university-wide approach to AI learning support enablement and experimentation. With that in mind, the DRIVE Route 2 AI in Education team reviewed existing bottom-up initiatives acros TU/e and suggested approaches to potential university-wide adoption. Now, we put them into action.

Over the next three years, this project aims to make it easier, faster, and more secure for teachers to experiment with AI tutoring, backed by dedicated support throughout. From start to finish, data privacy, security, and the unique needs of engineering education will remain front and center.

We are looking for interested teachers to pilot!

Our goal is to enable as many course pilots across TU/e as possible—testing, learning, and gathering insights to build high-quality AI solutions for our teachers in the years to come.

Are you a TU/e educator eager to help students learn with AI safely and responsibly? Join our group of experimentors and participate in our project!
